Washington's 'Blue Law' comes to an end

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Some liquor stores will be open Sunday as Washington's longstanding "Blue Law" passes into history. Scores of new state laws take effect that day, including an extensive election reform package.

The election overhaul is in response to the drawn-out governor's election that included tallies that produced two different winners.

An election challenge wasn't settled by the courts until just last month.

Other new laws deal with mental health insurance coverage, environmental protection, prescription drugs, public disclosure, and slander of a woman.

Starting this weekend, the state's 158 contract liquor stores run by the private sector all are eligible to sell their wares on Sundays. About three dozen plan to do so. And 20 of the 161 state-run stores will be open Sundays beginning Labor Day Weekend.
